I am pleased to have this opportunity to introduce myself and to explain a little about the role of the Governing Body.

My name is Rhona Barnett and I have been a governor at Brookvale School since 2000. I live on Brookvale Village, and all three of my children have attended the school.  My husband was one of the first pupils at the school when it opened 40 years ago this year. As I hope you can see the school and its success is very important to me (and my family).

The role of a governing body has changed in many ways over the years but its main purpose is still to be a critical friend to the school. What I mean by this is that we are involved in the strategic development of the school and we provide challenge, support and guidance in equal measure. We hold half termly meetings and the head is directly accountable to us for the performance of the school.

What we are not is parents representatives, as parents any questions or concerns you have about your child should first be discussed with your child’s class teacher and then the head.

As part of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership I also have the honour, along with the other chairs of the partnership schools governing bodies, of being one of the trustees of the partnership. This means that I am aware of the performances in the other schools in the partnership and provide similar strategic challenge and support to them.  Our aim is to ensure that we provide outstanding teaching and learning to all pupils across the partnership and that this has a positive effect on other schools in our area who are not part of the partnership.

Please take the time to have a look at the website, it is invaluable for keeping you in touch with the school and what your child is doing, it will also help you support your children in their learning.

Regards
Rhona Barnett
